Analgesics for “Go Home” post Spay-Neuter

The following agents can be used for “go home” analgesics for spay and neuter patients:
CANINE Analgesic agents for go home use
:
Realizing that an injection or oral administration of a separate analgesic may not be
necessary depending on patient status, surgical technique, anesthesia/analgesic surgical
protocol and perioperative drug use, several possible analgesic agents for DOGS useful
for home use or post discharge include the following.
Use of each of these agents should be based on determining appropriateness based on
signalment, history, concurrent medications, problem listing, physical exam, and
likelihood of client compliance and proper usage.
Duration of usage is variable, but normally will be 0-3 days postoperatively and will
depend on the same factors listed above. Ice packing and appropriate wound observation
and care=cleanliness, topical analgesics and anti-inflammatories perioperatively will also
assist with analgesia.
Carprofen 2.2mg/kg PO or SQ BID or 4.4mg/kg PO or SQ SID X 1-3 days max

Realizing that an injection or oral administration of a separate analgesic may not be
necessary depending on patient status, surgical technique, anesthesia/analgesic surgical
protocol and perioperative drug use, several possible analgesic agents for CATS useful
for home use or post discharge include the following.
Ice packing and appropriate wound observation
and care=cleanliness, topical analgesics and anti-inflammatories perisurgically also
greatly assist with analgesia.
PLEASE NOTE: Remember that cats do not possess the same metabolic pathways
for these agents that dogs possess. Accordingly, the dosage and frequency of
administration of these agents is much different than that for canine patients!!!!!!
(
ex. once a day administration to every other day administration for cats vs. twice a day
administration for dogs). Meloxicam should not be used with the manufacturer’s
dosing syringe for administration to feline patients, but instead should be dosed via
milliliter amounts as described below.

Carprofen 1-2.2mg/kg PO,SQ EOD X 1-2 doses max
Meloxicam 0.05-0.1mg/kg PO, SQ EOD X 1-2 doses max
