Bird banding report - Spring 2000
Although nets had been set up two weeks earlier (when severe winds destroyed one 12M net), banding didn't beginuntil May 1st. Many area birders were reporting low numbers of birds; and, ACNP was not an exception. It wastoo quiet. Our first effort of the spring season produced only one new bird, a Orange-crowned Warbler, and apreviously banded resident Black-capped Chickadee. Not a promising start.
In spite of our diligence, only 198 birds of 44 different species were captured and banded. Our lowest count sincebeginning in the spring of 1991. The busiest day was May 19th with 27 birds of 16 different species. Then, after19 rather unproductive days, the banding equipment was put away on June 5th.
However, as usual, there were a few exciting moments! Two, new for the gulch, species were banded. MagnoliaWarbler and Northern Parula. And, a Northern Mockingbird was added to the sight list. These surprising, but notunexpected, avian guests raised the species totals to 110 banded and 112 captured. The grand total of birdsrecorded by the banding team, since spring of 1991, now stands at 178. How important is the gulch?
When you read the newly revised summary and sight list, you will notice a grand total of "186". Is there adiscrepancy? Not exactly. More historic records are being uncovered and reviewed. So, when pre-1991 sightingsare added to the list (species that have been underscored), the known historic total count increases respectively.
Which brings us to another interesting note. The National Bird Banding Laboratory has accummulated all of
Allegra Collister's banding records for Colorado.
Would you believe 52,362? We are not sure of the earliest
dates. Of course, not all of the records are for ACNP. Allegra spent a great deal of time banding birds in Rocky
Mountain National Park, and at other sites too. The new challenge is to get all the data sorted out . . . . . . . .
someday. It will be interesting. What will it reveal? Hopefully, it won't be extremely difficult and we can have a
lot of fun in the process.
The horse ranch to the south of ACNP has been sold and the new owners have taken possession. Our drivewayparking privileges have not been revoked. We hope to continue a good neighbor relationship.
Just a reminder, the amended ACNP access protocol is in effect. Any questions, or concerns, may be addressed toa site custodian or the President of BCNA. Your comment is welcome.
Its time to start planning the fall season. Will we see the 7,000th bird banded? Will we add more species? Willthe total count (including historic records) exceed 200? We are very eager to get started again. Would mid Augustbe too soon?
Both of the complementary studies at ACNP are continuing. The vegetation study is producing some wonderfulresults and will probably be ongoing for another season, or more. And, our expert entomologist finds and collectsmore and more of the insects that appear on the avian diners menu.
